Posted on February 03, 2010 Courage to Stand Out

Eugene Hsu is a student at MIT. He has a very unique personal website and resume online. It is all drawn in what appears to be Microsoft Paint or a similar program. It is crudely rendered, funny, and extremely memorable. He is taking a chance and standing out from the crowd. This will almost certainly make some potential employers turn up their noses at him, but by created a polarizing resume he will stand out from potentially hundreds of other applicants for jobs he applies to. And, when he finds the employer that loves his approach he'll probably fit in pretty well at that job.

Of course this isn't the right way for everyone to go, but it's good to see what is out there beyond the standard resume templates and cover letters. Think about how you can stand out from the crowd with your resume and profile on Hired on the Spot, try creating a video resume, write regularly on your blog, and see what you can do to be remembered.

Posted on December 09, 2009 What to Blog About

My first full time job was at Ford Motor Company. I started there after I graduated with my Master's degree from the University of Michigan. I had been working summer and part time jobs up to that point so my educational background was solid but my work experience was pretty light weight. While I was looking for work I started reading a lot, building websites to learn more, and writing a blog about what I was learning and doing. I figured any time not spent on resumes and interviews should go toward making myself more valuable.

I looked at job postings and the skills people wanted, identified what I did well and what I needed to learn, and started learning it on my own. And I wrote about it. Blogging had two positive effects: 1) I clarified and reinforced my thoughts and memories of the new skills I was developing and 2) I could clearly demonstrate to potential employers that I know what I was talking about. I was backing up the list of buzzwords on my resume with clear, detailed discussions about what those things meant.

When you go to write for your blog I recommend doing the same thing. Talk about what you doing right now to make yourself better. Talk about something you learned about your industry. A better way of doing something in the job you have or the job you want. It can be as simple as a few paragraphs. A quick tip to avoid a common problem. Whether you're a web developer, a nurse, an engineer, or a truck driver there are always tricks of the trade. Write them down to show that you know them.

Here at Hired on the Spot all of you blog posts will link right to your resume, so instead of reposting your resume, fill out the forms to build your resume and then write something new and interesting in your blog.

Posted on November 07, 2009 Tatics To Finding A Job In A Difficult Economy

Though slow, the recovery is prompting employers to add new jobs as they see light at the end of the tunnel.

Finding these opportunities will be more challenging than it was before the recession. Companies are less likely to advertise openings in this environment given the sheer volume of talent in the market and their focus on improving existing leadership teams. This means infiltrating the hidden job market will be more important than ever before.

Creating a target company list will give you a starting point for uncovering the hidden jobs. But how do you create a target list?

Here are a few great approaches:

Use online job postings as a guide to those companies that are hiring and what those companies needs are.  You can then match your unique skills and abilities against the needs of the companies you've researched to compile your target list.

Connecting with the economic development officer at the local chamber of commerce. "You are not asking him or her for a job. The director of economic development relies on the quality of the local workforce to influence corporate decision-makers to expand their presence in your backyard. You are a critical part of that workforce. The economic development officer may know what companies are planning to relocate or expand in your area, and a referral from this individual could increase your chances of securing an interview.

Visit the local town hall and taking a look at the tax roll. Companies are usually the top payers of taxes and can be easily identified.

Once you've created your target list, it's time to share your list with your existing network of contacts to see if one of your contacts either works at one of the companies or knows someone who does. If your existing networking can't help you get an interview with your target companies, then it's time for you to turn to the social networking sites to make new connections with new contacts who work at or "have an in" at one or more of the companies on your list.

There are good jobs available out there, the challenge is getting to them and why our tatics must change and why our efforts must increase to combat the difficult times we are facing.  Keep your focus and continue to network and know that your next career is out there, you just have to be willing to find it.

Posted on September 28, 2009 6 Reasons Why Recruiters Don't Call You Back

Like anyone else out there you have probably applied to a sea of job postings and other resources where you submitted your resume and never heard anything back.  That silence can become deafening at times and make you wonder just what you might be doing wrong.  Some of it is the amount of resumes that recruiters and employers are getting and they do not have the time to respond to every resume submitted and why for the most part you always get a generic auto response.

There are things that we do wrong though and need to make sure that we are following some "Rules Of Thumb" when we apply online.

This is the world we live in and every little detail counts so make sure that you are not overlooking something that could make a potential employer not call you because of a simple error.

Posted on September 22, 2009 Think Outside The Box

Hired On The Spot is all about marketing the individual and creating that individual into a brand.  We implore tactics that are "Outside The Box" and with the workforce in it's current state of affairs, it is important to ask yourself, "Is The Old Way Working" when it comes to your job search.

We have T-Shirt Resumes that show employers just what you have done and how hungry you are to find a new career.  Now we know you would not wear this to the interview, but what about the gym?  The grocery store?  While running some errands?

Some may let pride get in the way and not take advantage of this but you have to start thinking of new methods to get the word out on your job search.  What are you willing to do to find work?  There will always be someone out there willing to do more, so ask yourself if your doing enough.

Here is a GREAT ARTICLE about a man who wore a sandwich board that said "HIRE ME" walking around downtown London and was hired from his "Outside The Box" tactics and resolve to try new means to get noticed by potential employers.  This is just one case of someone trying a new way of thinking and it worked.  We will continue to show you new ways to GET NOTICED by employers, to showcase your talents, it's up to you to take the next step and truly step OUTSIDE THE BOX!

Posted on September 22, 2009 Why Your Resume Gets Tossed

Like anybody out there, you have asked yourself just what should I put on my resume.  Do I have the right key words?  Do I have the right information, too much, or not enough?

These are all great questions to ask yourself when looking at your resume.  Recruiters and any HR department for any employer look at thousands of resumes a year and you need to make sure you are taking the right steps to ensure your resume is seen and not tossed to the trash bin.

Here is a great article on Yahoo that will help you know some of the practices that you should follow and others that you should avoid.

Posted on September 09, 2009 Hired on the Spot Pricing

We've updated some pricing on Hired on the Spot today - charging for job postings and raising prices for featured jobs and resumes. We know that can often be upsetting but we want you to understand why we're doing it - we need to earn enough money to keep the lights on. We have to charge for our services because it costs us money to run the site.

Job Postings

We've started charging for job posts that were previously free. We made sure the coming prices were shown on the home page and mentioned that the free posts were for a limited time only. We'd love it if everything was free, but we offer a good value compared to other job sites - many of whom charge hundreds of dollars per post and we're hard at work on even more new features to make finding the best employees easier and more pleasant for you.

Featured Jobs and Resumes

We've also raised the prices for featured jobs and featured resumes. It's still only a few cents per day to show up at the top of the list, have us tweet about you, and be featured on the HOTS home page. We're also working on some new partnerships that will show your job or resume on other web sites. Featuring you job or resume is optional, but it can make a difference. Some people will only look at the top few listings before making a choice and you want to be in that group. The increased prices go right back into running and improving the website so you'll see more features and improvements as a result.

Your Thoughts

We hope this helps keep things transparent and in the open, if you have any feedback on our pricing, site features, or anything else we do please feel free to leave them in the comments or use the feedback box in at the bottom of every page. We love hearing from you and will respond to all the feedback, positive or negative, that we get.
